Mallorca waste costs: Tirme tariffs face scrutiny

Mallorca’s waste-treatment tariffs face fresh scrutiny after the PSIB lodged a motion in Palma on 31 August calling for a review of what Tirme is paid. The Socialist parliamentary group wants the Sindicatura de Cuentas to produce a report on revising the rates. Its move follows a Consell de Mallorca General Intervention report that judged the solid-waste treatment system unfavourable and said its impact was serious.

PSIB deputy Llorenç Pou said the tariff paid to Tirme was far above the company’s real cost of providing the service. The party says the formula uses estimates rather than actual costs, adding charges it considers unacceptable while delivering extraordinary profits for Tirme.

The socialists also want a separate study into the amount the Consell de Mallorca should receive for handling waste transferred from Eivissa to Mallorca, where Tirme will treat it. The Balearic Government has approved €50 million over ten years for the Consell to take on management of Ibiza’s waste treatment.

PSIB criticised PP and Vox for backing that payment in parliament. It says the transfer is the result of poor planning and management by the Consell d’Eivissa.
