2.5m tourists: Mallorca PP hails July slowdown
Mallorca’s PP says July’s 2.5 million international tourists are the first sign that tourism pressure can be curbed without damaging the island’s main economic engine. In Palma on 2 September, Consell de Mallorca PP spokeswoman Núria Riera pointed to annual growth of just 0.1 per cent. She said the figures backed the approach of Consell president Llorenç Galmés.
The party says it is not seeking growth for its own sake. Instead, it wants fewer pressures and more value from tourism, while keeping it compatible with the wellbeing of people on Mallorca.
PP points to supply checks
Riera said three years of what she called serious, cautious and often quiet work were now beginning to show results. She credited tighter control of tourist accommodation, action against illegal offers and policies aimed at limiting growth.
The PP says this approach can raise quality without turning against tourism or putting Mallorca’s key economic sector at risk. Galmés’s government, it added, had recognised from its first day that the island needed to change direction with measures designed for the long term.
Socialists face PP attack
Riera also accused the PSIB of hypocrisy for calling for limits after governing the Balearic Islands through the previous two terms. She said the party had allowed Mallorca to grow without control during its eight years in office.
She linked that criticism to 10,000 private swimming pools authorised between 2015 and 2024. Riera conceded that much work remained, but said the July figures showed tourist pressure could be contained without wrecking Mallorca’s economic engine.
