Balearic tourism employment rises 2.6% in July

Tourism employment in Spain’s Balearic Islands rose by 2.6% in July, according to figures released by Turespaña on Monday, 24 August 2026. The sector recorded 194,176 social-security contributors in the second quarter across hospitality, travel agencies and tour operators.

Employees accounted for 179,704 of the total, up 2.7% year on year. The number of self-employed workers fell by 1.2% to 14,472.

Across Spain, tourism-related employment increased by 110,712 contributors, or 3.7%, in July, taking the total close to 3.1 million. Tourism represented 13.9% of all contributors, while the overall labour market expanded by 2.8% year on year.

Hospitality added 70,409 contributors nationally, including 21,246 in accommodation and 49,163 in food and drink services. Travel agencies, however, recorded a decrease of 1,587 workers.

Classification change affects travel agency figures

The Ministry of Industry and Tourism said the decline reported for travel agencies does not reflect an actual fall in activity. Changes to the CNAE business classifications moved some work previously listed under travel agencies into other categories.

Employee numbers in Spain’s tourism sector rose by 4.1% in July. Hospitality employment increased by 4%, while employment at travel agencies and tour operators declined by 1.5%; self-employment in tourism grew by 1.8%, although self-employed travel agency workers fell by 4.1%.

Employment across hospitality, travel agencies and tour operators increased in every autonomous community except Ceuta and Melilla. Andalusia recorded the largest numerical gain, with 12,320 contributors, while the Valencian Community posted the strongest percentage rise at 5%.
