Palma tourism protest: seven face police allegations

Seven people identified after Palma’s 26 July tourism protest are under investigation for alleged public disorder and damage. The National Police has sent its report to the relevant judicial authority, which must now continue the inquiry and decide whether to call the seven to give evidence. Organisers say the allegations seek to blame peaceful demonstrators for officers’ violent conduct.

The march against tourist overcrowding was organised by Menys Turisme, Més Vida. Its spokesperson, Dani Comas, said the disorder arose from the presence of riot police, not from the demonstrators.

The inquiry into the conduct of the officers is now being handled by Valencia’s Higher Police Headquarters, which oversees the Police Intervention Unit, the riot police force. Comas said moving the investigation to Valencia could delay the process and allow those responsible to escape punishment.

The organisers are continuing the steps needed to bring a collective legal action over the police operation.
