Mallorca tourism protest groups wait a month for talks

A month after Palma’s 26 July protest against tourism pressure, environmental groups GOB and Terraferida are still waiting for talks with the Balearic Government and the Council of Mallorca. They say neither institution has responded to their request for a meeting after the march. GOB president Joan Moranta said on Wednesday that the only reply had been confirmation that their email had arrived.

Antònia Maria Estarellas, the Balearic minister for the presidency, government coordination and local cooperation, said she had not known about the request, either before or after the protest. If a meeting takes place, she said, it should be with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, which she said remains in contact with all sectors.

Estarellas said the government listens to everyone in the debate over the Balearic Islands’ tourism model. She pointed to its Sustainability Pact, launched two years ago with a range of organisations, including GOB, which took part in the first part of the document.

She said the government had heard many proposals from groups, business associations and unions. Any decision on further meetings with the environmental groups, she added, now rests with the tourism ministry.
