Balearics tourism model drives social anger, union says

August brought lower unemployment across the Balearic Islands, yet CCOO says social anger is still rising. The trade union issued its warning in Palma on Wednesday, 2 September, and called for the islands’ tourism model to change. It links the discontent to tourist saturation and the work created around it.

CCOO says the pressure from tourism harms citizens and leaves workers with more insecure jobs, sharper seasonal swings, heavier workloads and worse conditions. It says the frustration has also shown itself in citizen actions held during the summer.

The union says employers have shown little interest in the changes needed to build a more varied, resilient and sustainable economy. It argues that relying on a single industry is not an answer, especially when sun-and-beach tourism faces risks from the climate emergency.

CCOO also says this form of tourism does not give workers enough income or wellbeing for a decent life. It accuses the Balearic government of failing to launch measures that would create more opportunities, and says business interests have so far come before the wellbeing of working people.
