Mallorca's early tourist image on show in Valldemossa
Mallorca’s journey from a little-known island to a European travel destination unfolds through posters, maps and postcards in Valldemossa, Mallorca. The Coll Bardolet Cultural Foundation is hosting the exhibition ‘Viatgers a l’illa. Un paradís de paper’. The Council of Mallorca announced the show on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.
The exhibits come from the Pons Company Collection and include engravings, letters and travel books. The show focuses on how travel writing and illustrated publications changed perceptions of Mallorca in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Magazines, guides, leaflets and postcards helped establish the island as a destination for travellers, writers and artists.
Antònia Roca, the council’s vice-president and councillor for Culture and Heritage, said the images and documents give people a way into Mallorca’s history. The council has granted the foundation 60,000 euros for its ‘Art, cultura i patrimoni’ project in 2026. The funding supports visual arts and the foundation’s cultural programme throughout the year.
