Uber cuts 3,300 jobs worldwide in major team shake-up

Uber is cutting around 3,300 jobs worldwide, removing 10% of its workforce as it strips back management layers and reshapes its teams. The ride-hailing and delivery company announced the move on 2 September. It says everyone affected has been told, apart from in countries where local procedures must be completed first.

The cuts are part of a drive to make Uber less complicated after five years of rapid expansion. Chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi said revenue had nearly tripled, but growth had also brought more layers of management, more coordination and divided responsibilities.

Fewer layers and smaller teams

Uber has already cut by 20% the number of staff working seven or more levels below the chief executive. It has also reduced the number of very small teams by almost 50%.

Khosrowshahi said the aim was a simpler organisation focused on creating rather than managing.

New president drives overhaul

In June, Uber cut 23% of its people team, including human resources, facilities and corporate culture divisions.

The move forms part of the strategy led by new president Jill Hazelbaker, who took the role less than a month ago. Her brief includes organising the company’s people and locations after the previous executive responsible for that area left Uber this year.
