On Mallorca, family storytelling sessions in Inca and Manacor need new dates after bad weather: across the Balearics, 442 mental health emergencies involved under-18s last year. The Balearic government’s Health Department released the figure on Friday as it announced events for World Mental Health Day. Another family storytelling session is planned for Saturday.

Under-18s in the figures

The 442 cases made up 10.6 per cent of the 4,169 mental health emergencies recorded across the Balearics last year. Under-18s also accounted for 177 of 2,205 hospital admissions.

Children and teenagers made 13,392 of the 43,805 visits to outpatient clinics outside hospitals. They also accounted for 1,900 of the 17,169 hospital outpatient visits.

Family events and changes to care

The October programme includes discussions, film screenings followed by discussion, family activities and video podcasts in which people share their experiences. The storytelling sessions in Inca and Manacor were postponed because of bad weather; replacement dates have yet to be set.

The Balearic government is also reorganising mental health care for children and teenagers. Its proposed single point of access would assess each young person’s needs and direct them to suitable support. The plans include care for depression, anxiety and behavioural disorders, alongside support for families.
