Spain's universities demand more research cash
More than 80% of Spain’s research is carried out by universities: their rectors are joining scientists in a call for more funding before the 29 November general election. The Spanish university rectors’ conference, CRUE, backed the joint appeal on Tuesday, 20 October. Its president, Julián Garde, signed the statement.
The appeal brings together organisations with a wide reach. The Confederation of Scientific Societies of Spain represents 90 societies and more than 46,000 researchers. The Federation of Spanish Scientific and Medical Associations represents 150,000 members from 46 societies.
They plan to put five proposals to the government formed after the election. They want steady, long-term funding for research projects and research investment above 2% of gross domestic product. They also call for less paperwork at research projects and centres, better pay and working conditions for researchers, and more support for university research. Their final proposal is to strengthen the links between research and businesses.
