In Calvià, Mallorca, a hotel is left with an unpaid bill of more than 500 euros on Sunday afternoon: a British man and woman leave with their belongings and damage in the room. The Civil Guard arrests them shortly afterwards at a bus stop more than two kilometres away. Hotel staff called officers when the pair hurried out without paying, the Civil Guard’s Balearic Islands command says.

A booking in someone else’s name

The pair declined to show their original identity documents. Instead, they showed officers poor-quality photographs on their phones.

Neither was officially named on the hotel booking. For days, the woman had posed as the person who held the reservation, allowing her to add charges to it and use the hotel’s facilities, according to the Civil Guard.

A previous case in Valencia

The Civil Guard says the pair had used the same method this year at another hotel in the same chain in the province of Valencia. A police database check also found several notices concerning them, including an order from the National Police in Valencia to find and arrest them over suspected fraud and damage to property.

A court had barred both from leaving Spain and taken their passports. They have now been brought before a court over the alleged hotel fraud in Calvià.
