Balearic Islands recover all used industrial oil from 2025

The Balearic Islands, Spain, recovered all 3,285 tonnes of used industrial oil remaining after treatment in 2025, the Spanish Used Industrial Oils Management System said on 19 August 2026. The material came from 3,308 gross tonnes generated at 1,864 establishments across the islands.

Three quarters of the recovered oil underwent regeneration, producing 1,500 tonnes of regenerated lubricant and 700 tonnes of industrial oil. The remainder was used as low-sulphur BIA fuel for industrial furnaces and boilers.

Collections across the islands

Companies working with the Spanish Used Industrial Oils Management System completed almost 5,700 collections in 63 municipalities during 2025. They collected 336 tonnes in rural areas and a further 445 tonnes in mountain areas.

Mechanical workshops accounted for 54 per cent of the establishments generating the waste, while industrial facilities made up 13 per cent. Used oil also arose from businesses in commerce, hospitality, transport and agriculture.

Regeneration cuts emissions

The regeneration process removes contaminants and recovers material and energy resources for new products. It avoided 2,093 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in the Balearic Islands in 2025, according to the system.

Producing the recovered resources through conventional methods would have required about 800,000 barrels of crude oil.
