Menorca vehicle limit plan heads for summer vote
Menorca could limit vehicles entering the island from next summer, but the plan still lacks the votes it needs. The Island Council meets in an extraordinary session on Wednesday, 2 September, to debate changing the Biosphere Reserve law. The governing PP must win backing from left-wing parties before any restriction can move ahead.
The debate had been due on Monday but was put back to give the groups time to narrow their differences. The PP governs without a majority and cannot count on support from independent councillor and former Vox member Maite de Medrano. A qualified majority is needed for the legal change.
PSOE seeks tighter exemptions
The PSOE asked for the delay so it could examine the PP proposal. It wants tougher restrictions and fewer exemptions in the original plan.
The party wants to stop second-home owners and people from other Balearic Islands bypassing any vehicle limit. It also calls for strict oversight of car-hire companies to prevent them exploiting legal loopholes.
Més says the law already allows a limit
Més per Menorca has said it will vote against changing the law. Its councillors argue that there is no need to amend the Biosphere Reserve legislation.
They say the law approved in 2023 already gives the Island Council legal cover to limit vehicle entry. Més wants that restriction operating in the next summer season.
