Mallorca's Enric Mas keeps Vuelta red for third day
Mallorca rider Enric Mas keeps the red jersey at the Vuelta after coming home with the main bunch in Elche de la Sierra on Tuesday, 1 September. The Movistar Team rider lost no time to his overall rivals over stage 10, a 184.7-kilometre route from Alcaraz. He will start Wednesday's stage 11 in red for a third consecutive day.
Tronchon grabs first Grand Tour win
French rider Bastien Tronchon of Groupama-FDJ United won the stage from a disorderly sprint in Elche de la Sierra. Yevgueni Fedorov and Xabier Mikel Azparren attacked with 700 metres left and briefly split the front of the bunch, but the charging sprinters caught them 150 metres from the line.
Tronchon beat Magnus Cort and Thibau Nys for his first victory in a Grand Tour. Earlier, a breakaway — a group that had ridden clear of the bunch — built a lead of more than two minutes before being reeled in after the Socovos climb, the last of three Category 3 ascents.
Mas appeared short of team support in the closing kilometres but reached the finish without trouble.
Cartagena to Lorca comes next
Stage 11 runs 153.8 kilometres from Cartagena to Lorca and has only one Category 3 climb. That leaves open the prospect of another sprint finish, while Mas's priority is holding his advantage in the overall race.
