Mallorca’s waste charges could fall by 10%, but the promised cut is not yet confirmed. In Palma, Mallorca, on Friday, 9 October, Balearic government spokesman Antoni Costa said €50 million in aid to the Council of Mallorca could help bring charges down. The money is part of an agreement to bring waste from Eivissa to Mallorca.

There is a catch over how the aid can be spent. On Thursday, MÉS per Mallorca pointed to the grant decision, which limits its use to receiving and treating waste from Eivissa or to investments by Tirme, the company that operates the waste service.

Costa said that second option could make the cut possible. If the council funds Tirme’s investments, he argued, the company could reduce the debt it took on for them and pass less of that cost on through waste charges. He did not say whether or when the promised 10% reduction would take effect.
