Mallorca's Palma port sensor can warn of oil spills

At berth 70 in the port of Palma, Mallorca, a new sensor tracks water quality continuously: it can warn of changes, including possible oil spills. Club de Mar-Mallorca said on 8 October 2026 that its Posinode data service is already running there. The club says it is the first site in the Balearic Islands to use the service.

Port water checks have traditionally relied on periodic samples and analysis. Posinode adds readings between those checks, recording physical and chemical measures of water quality and showing how conditions change. It can send early alerts and keeps past readings and reports for environmental monitoring.

For the club, that means a chance to spot possible incidents sooner and take water quality into account when making decisions about port operations.
