Balearic Islands storms forecast for the weekend

The Balearic Islands are forecast to see thundery showers on Friday, 21 August 2026, as a powerful low affects northern and eastern Spain, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) said. AEMET spokesman José Luis Camacho said showers and thunderstorms were possible across the islands during Friday afternoon, with unsettled conditions set to continue on Saturday.

Maximum temperatures are expected to fall noticeably in the Balearic Islands on Friday. On Saturday, daytime highs are not expected to rise in the islands, unlike in much of Spain.

Rain and thunderstorms across eastern Spain

An orange weather warning is in force for the northern and southern coasts of Tarragona, where up to 100 litres of rain per square metre are forecast on Friday. Heavy, persistent showers may continue into the early hours of Saturday and affect coastal areas of Barcelona and Castellón to a lesser extent.

On Saturday afternoon, strong showers and thunderstorms are possible in the Ebro valley and the Iberian System, bringing gusty winds, hail and up to 20 litres of rain per square metre per hour. Humid air is expected to maintain conditions favourable for showers and storms in the Mediterranean on Sunday, particularly in the Ebro valley and inland areas of the Valencian Community.

Low pressure system moves towards Portugal

Weather portal Eltiempo.es said the low is developing several hundred kilometres north-north-east of the Azores and will gradually move towards Portugal and north-western Spain. The National Hurricane Center has included it on its tropical weather outlook, but puts the chance of subtropical or tropical development at 20% over both the next 48 hours and the next seven days.

Eltiempo.es expects further showers and strong thunderstorms in the Balearic Islands on Monday. Its forecast for rainfall later in the following week remains subject to change.
