Climate in Can Picafort — North Coast with the Embat at Your Back
Can Picafort sits on the Bay of Alcúdia, one of the longest stretches of sandy beach on Mallorca. The flat coastal plain and open northerly exposure shape the climate in two ways: more rainfall than the south of the island, and in summer a steady sea breeze that takes the edge off the heat.
Precipitation totals, based on proxy data from the Alcúdia region (approx. 8 km to the east), average around 607 mm per year — well above the AEMET figure for Palma (449 mm). Northern Mallorca receives more rainfall in autumn and winter, as weather systems moving in from the Mediterranean can hit the less sheltered north coast directly. November is the wettest month, with around 89 mm.
Summer is dry and warm. Daily highs in July reach around 32°C — but the Embat, the northeasterly wind that sweeps the bay, cools the coast noticeably in the afternoons. The daily mean sits at around 26°C. According to aggregator climate data, July sees only about 11 mm of rain. The Bay of Alcúdia is shallow and easy to swim in summer: water temperatures reach around 25°C in July and around 26°C in August.
One distinctive feature of Can Picafort's location is the gentle curve of its water temperature across the year. The shallow bay retains solar warmth well, which makes early autumn particularly pleasant: in October the sea is still around 23°C, even as the air begins to cool. For beach holidays, September is the sweet spot.
Winters are mild. The daily mean in January is around 11°C. Can Picafort is noticeably quieter in winter, but the S'Albufera nature reserve right on its doorstep makes it an appealing base for wildlife watching.
More on the north coast climate is covered in the Climate Chart Mallorca. Water temperature patterns are explained in Water Temperature Mallorca. The Can Picafort Local Guide introduces the town from a traveler's perspective.
Note on data sources: Can Picafort has no AEMET climate normal station of its own. Monthly values are based on proxy data from Alcúdia (~8 km away) and should be read as reliable reference figures for the north coast. AEMET B228 (1981–2010) was used for Palma comparison values.
