Prices that would be unthinkable in Germany are standard here. Why Mallorca's internet is better than Germany's

Anyone arriving from Germany will be rubbing their eyes in disbelief: fibre directly into the home (FTTH – Fiber to the Home) is not the exception in Spain, it is the standard. Telefónica (Movistar) invested early in FTTH rather than copper, and competitors have continued to expand the network ever since. The result: Spain ranks among the leaders in Europe with fibre population coverage of over 90 %, well above the EU average of 64 %. Even rural areas achieve around 79 % coverage – also a top figure in the EU.

For Mallorca this means: in Palma, Calvià, Llucmajor, Manacor, Inca, Pollença and most other municipalities you can get symmetrical fibre connections with 300 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s. Recommendation: Always check at least two providers in parallel, as the networks differ. Orange offers a particularly fast address checker (cobertura.orange.es), which many people use for an initial overview. WiMAX (wireless internet)

Satellite (Starlink)

Starlink from SpaceX is now available on Mallorca as well and delivers acceptable speeds even in remote locations. Advantage: no ground infrastructure required. Signing a contract: step by step

1. Check address coverage – with at least two providers (→ table above)
2. Choose a tariff – Fibra only or a Fibra + Móvil bundle? Check the minimum term (often 12 months)
3. Have your documents ready – NIE, Spanish IBAN, address, identity document
4. Sign the contract – online, by phone, or in person at a provider's shop in Palma (all major providers have shops, as does ConectaBalear)
5. Arrange an installation appointment – a technician typically comes 1–2 weeks after the contract is signed
6. Set up the router – in most cases a Wi-Fi router is included free of charge and configured by the technician

Internet without a NIE: what's still possible?

Important: The major national providers (Movistar, Vodafone, Orange, Digi) generally require an NIE and a Spanish IBAN for landline contracts – without this combination, online orders are automatically rejected. Smaller and local providers are sometimes more flexible; ask them directly.

The most common mistakes when setting up internet on Mallorca

From real experience: these are the points where things most often go wrong.

1. Availability not checked in advance – Fibre-optic broadband is not available at the desired address, yet the move is already planned. Always run the address check before signing a rental or purchase contract.
2. No NIE applied for before moving – Applying for an NIE takes time; without an NIE, no landline contract is possible. Apply for your NIE as early as possible.
3. Foreign IBAN – Many online forms automatically reject non-Spanish IBANs. Open a Spanish bank account (→ Bank Account Guide).
4. Promotional price not questioned – Low introductory prices often expire after 12 months. Always ask what the price will be after the promotional period.
5. Only one provider checked – Networks don't always overlap. If you only check with Movistar, you might miss that Orange or Adamo is available at your address for less.
6. WiMAX option overlooked – Finca owners often assume that internet is simply not possible. ConectaBalear reaches even very rural locations via WiMAX.
