Es Carbó is a long, undeveloped natural beach that cannot be reached directly by car. From the harbour area in Colònia de Sant Jordi, the usual access route follows the coast on foot for around 2.3 kilometres. At your destination, you will find fine sand, shallow water and a broad belt of dunes—but no sun loungers, toilets, water sports or restaurants. It is precisely this combination of open space, the walk and the lack of facilities that distinguishes Es Carbó from many of Mallorca’s more easily accessible beaches.

The Balearic beach catalogue lists Carbo under Cala Sant Vicenç in the locality field, but places Platja d’es Carbó 0.9 kilometres from Colònia de Sant Jordi in its detailed official description. The other location details also refer to Mallorca’s south coast: Colònia de Sant Jordi, Cap de ses Salines, Port Colònia de Sant Jordi and Finca sa Vall are all mentioned. Where exactly is Es Carbó beach, Mallorca?

Es Carbó lies on Mallorca’s south coast, southeast of Colònia de Sant Jordi, opposite small offshore islands. The Balearic beach catalogue states that it is 0.9 kilometres from Colònia de Sant Jordi, while the described walking route from Platja d’es Port covers around 2.3 kilometres. The distance therefore depends on whether it refers to the direct location or the coastal route that you actually have to walk.

There are discrepancies in the place and island names. The locality field in the beach catalogue says Cala Sant Vicenç, although the detailed official description mentions Colònia de Sant Jordi, Cap de ses Salines, Port Colònia de Sant Jordi and the neighbouring Finca sa Vall. The beach catalogue uses the name na Molino for the small island opposite. Other beach descriptions call it na Molina or Isla Moltona. In each case, this means the small island visible from the beach in the shallow bay.

According to the Balearic beach catalogue, Es Carbó borders Finca sa Vall. Behind the beach, dunes begin with sea daffodils, sea holly, pines, junipers and wild olives. The area is designated as a nature reserve; parts of the dune landscape are also fenced off and belong to private, protected land.

The information within the Balearic beach catalogue is contradictory regarding the type of beach: the core data record classifies Carbo as a rocky beach, while the detailed official description refers to a very large beach with fine sand. Other beach descriptions also portray Es Carbó as an extensive sandy area, partly covered with natural deposits of Posidonia and branches.

How do you get to Es Carbó?

The easiest way to reach Es Carbó is on foot along the coast from Colònia de Sant Jordi. The starting point is the area around Platja d’es Port or the harbour. From there, walk east, pass Es Dolç and continue along the coastal path. After an abandoned fisherman’s house, the next headland marks the beginning of the long beach.

The route is given as around 2.3 kilometres and, depending on the description, takes approximately 30 to 35 minutes. This time refers to the one-way journey. You should therefore also plan for the return trip and bear in mind that you will have to carry your own water, food and beach equipment.

A second option begins at Cap de ses Salines. The Balearic beach catalogue puts this walk at six kilometres. This route is therefore considerably longer than the access from Colònia de Sant Jordi.

Es Carbó can also be reached by sea. The beach catalogue even describes arriving by boat as the best option, but expressly points out the shallow bay, sand, seaweed and small islands. Around 250 metres from the shore, the water depth is stated to be only about 2.5 metres. Particular care is therefore required when anchoring. The nearest harbour facility is Port Colònia de Sant Jordi, 0.9 nautical miles away.

Note: The walk is an integral part of the visit. Take only as much equipment as you can carry for the entire outward and return journey.

Where can you park for Es Carbó?

For Es Carbó, park in Colònia de Sant Jordi and continue on foot from there. There is no car park directly beside the beach. The Balearic beach catalogue expressly advises leaving your car in Colònia de Sant Jordi before beginning the coastal walk of about 2.3 kilometres.

Another parking option is mentioned at Cap de ses Salines. From there, however, you face a walk of around six kilometres. This option is mainly suitable if you deliberately plan for the longer route.

Free parking in Colònia de Sant Jordi is also mentioned. However, this does not guarantee that a space will be available at any particular time. The beach’s seasonal occupancy is classified as high in the Balearic beach catalogue, and Colònia de Sant Jordi is the starting point for the shorter route.

Warning: Do not attempt to drive all the way to the beach. Es Carbó can only be reached on foot from the landward side; the dunes and neighbouring terrain are protected and partly fenced off.

What are the sand, water and swimming conditions like?

Es Carbó consists mainly of fine, light-coloured sand and lies beside shallow, usually calm water. The small offshore island partly protects the bay from the open sea. Beach descriptions therefore mention only occasional waves and a gently shelving entry into the water.

At 1,400 metres long and around 45 metres wide, the sandy area is extensive. Even when Posidonia lies along the waterline, there is usually still space farther back on the sand. After stormy weather, larger quantities of washed-up plant remains may accumulate. They are not regularly removed from this natural beach.

The fine sand contradicts the formal classification as a rocky beach in the core data record of the Balearic beach catalogue. For your visit, the detailed description is more helpful: it expressly refers to a huge beach of fine sand with Posidonia and branches washed ashore by the sea.

The offshore island looks close but lies several hundred metres from the shore. Experienced swimmers may consider it reachable, but this does not constitute a general recommendation. The route crosses open water, and small boats and yachts anchor in the bay. There are no water sports or organised tourist swimming facilities at the beach itself.

Is Es Carbó suitable for children?

Es Carbó is generally suitable for children because of its fine sand and shallow water, but families must cope with the longer walk and be completely self-sufficient. Only occasional waves are described at the water’s edge, and the broad sandy area provides plenty of room to play.

The crucial factor is not the beach itself but the access route. From Colònia de Sant Jordi, you need to cover around 2.3 kilometres each way. Children, beach bags, a parasol, drinks and food all have to reach the beach and be carried back again. At the beach itself, you cannot buy more water, use a toilet or hire a sun lounger.

Natural shade is not reliably available. Although pines, junipers, wild olives and other plants grow behind the beach, the dunes are protected and partly fenced off. Bringing your own beach shelter or parasol is therefore recommended. Take care not to enter the vegetation and set up sun protection only on the open beach area.

Plan for Es Carbó as an unsupervised natural beach without services. Children should be closely supervised even in the shallow water. The area farther out is used by anchoring boats.

What facilities are available at the beach?

Es Carbó has no tourist infrastructure: there are no toilets, sun loungers, parasols, restaurants or water sports centres. There are also no buildings directly on the beach. It is described as a natural beach where you must bring everything you need for the day and take it away with you afterwards.

Useful equipment includes sufficient drinking water, food and your own sun protection. The recommendation to bring a parasol follows from the lack of rental facilities and the absence of reliably usable shade. Because there are no waste disposal facilities at the beach, you should carry all rubbish back to Colònia de Sant Jordi.

The nearest beach bar is at Es Dolç in the direction of Colònia de Sant Jordi. Its distance from Es Carbó is given as around 1.5 kilometres. Es Dolç also lies on the usual coastal route, so you pass it on the outward or return journey.

What you find at Es Carbó is exclusively the bay’s natural environment: sand, shallow sea, dunes, coastal vegetation and opportunities for birdwatching. Posidonia and washed-up branches are not signs of unusual neglect but part of the appearance of this uncleared beach.

Note: Do not rely on finding a kiosk or sanitary facilities. Pack water and sun protection, and take all your rubbish away with you.

When is Es Carbó particularly busy?

Es Carbó receives many visitors during the season, but they are spread across a beach 1,400 metres long. The Balearic beach catalogue rates seasonal occupancy as high. At the same time, the authority describes the beach as comparatively quiet because of the necessary walk. Both can be true given the enormous length of the sandy area: many people can visit without the beach feeling as cramped as a small cove.

In addition to beachgoers, boats and yachts anchor in the bay and bring passengers to the beach. The walk limits the number of people arriving by land but does not prevent the beach from becoming busier during the season. Es Carbó is particularly popular with residents and holidaymakers from Colònia de Sant Jordi.

If having as few people around as possible is important to you, expect more visitors during the peak season and plan for the walk, the search for parking in Colònia de Sant Jordi and boat traffic in the bay. At the same time, the beach’s length makes it possible to keep your distance from other groups.

The condition of the waterline also varies. After storms, more Posidonia may lie along the shore. Because these natural deposits are not usually removed, the beach’s appearance changes according to the weather.

What is near Es Carbó?

On the route from Colònia de Sant Jordi, Es Dolç is the nearest developed beach stop in the direction of the town. It also has the nearest beach bar, around 1.5 kilometres from Es Carbó. Farther west are Platja d’es Port and Port Colònia de Sant Jordi, where the usual walking route begins.

Es Trenc and Ses Covetes are mentioned as other natural beaches on the south coast. Es Carbó is considered an alternative for visitors willing to accept the walk and looking for a beach without services. This does not imply a direct comparison of their respective occupancy or facilities.

Finca sa Vall borders directly on Es Carbó. According to the Balearic beach catalogue, its cactus garden can be visited on Thursdays. A path leads from the finca to the March family palace, which was built beside a defensive tower dating from the 14th century. As visiting arrangements may change, you should check accessibility locally and respect private or restricted areas.

The dunes directly behind the beach are not freely available as recreational space either. They provide a habitat for coastal birds and plants such as white sea daffodils and sea holly. Parts of the area are fenced off.

What should you know before visiting?

For Es Carbó, you need provisions, sufficient water, your own sun protection and the stamina for at least 4.6 kilometres of walking when arriving and departing via Colònia de Sant Jordi. This is in addition to the distance you cover on the 1,400-metre-long beach itself.

Stay on the coastal path and the open sandy area. The first line of dunes supports protected vegetation typical of the location, including sea daffodils, sea holly, pines, junipers and wild olives. Fenced areas mark private and protected land. Birdwatching is possible but should be done without entering the dunes.

Posidonia and driftwood are part of the beach. The waterline may be heavily covered, especially after a storm. If you expect a completely cleared beach, Es Carbó therefore does not meet that preference. Because of the beach’s depth, the natural deposits can usually be avoided without moving into the dunes.

For boats, the shallow bay and small islands are the main risks. With a depth of around 2.5 metres at 250 metres from the shore, careful anchoring is required. Swimmers should also be aware of boat traffic in the bay.

For dogs, seasonal restrictions, path closures or conservation rules, follow the current signs at the site. Respect restricted areas and take care around the dune vegetation.
