Cala Sant Vicenç

Cala Sant Vicenç lies on Mallorca’s northwest coast, where the Serra de Tramuntana meets the sea. The small coastal resort in the municipality of Pollença was originally a fishing village and now spreads across partly steep slopes around several bathing coves. This is precisely what distinguishes it from a classic, continuous beach: you can move between Cala Barques, Cala Clara, Cala Molins and Cala Carbó without leaving the resort. Rocks, clear water and views of the Cavall Bernat mountain range define each of the coves.

The Catalan spelling is Cala Sant Vicenç, while in Spanish the resort is called Cala San Vicente. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue lists Cala Sant Vicent as a 370-metre-long and 23-metre-wide sandy beach with high seasonal occupancy. On site, however, there is no single continuous stretch of beach, but rather a series of coves with different facilities. While Cala Barques and Cala Molins are supervised sandy beaches with sun loungers and parasols, Cala Clara and especially Cala Carbó feel considerably more natural. In strong winds and high waves, however, the sea here can quickly become rough.

Where is Cala Sant Vicenç and what makes it special?

Cala Sant Vicenç lies in northern Mallorca within the municipality of Pollença and combines four nearby coves with a striking mountain backdrop. The resort is situated on the northwest coast in the area between Pollença and Port de Pollença. Depending on the route and measuring point, Port de Pollença is only a few kilometres away; approximately five to ten kilometres is given as a guide.

The location is unusually exposed. There is no well-sheltered bay in front of the beaches, while the foothills of the Serra de Tramuntana rise behind the resort. The Cavall Bernat massif is particularly prominent and can be seen from several coves. Views towards the Formentor peninsula are also part of the scenery.

Cala Sant Vicenç was originally a fishing village. A jetty at Cala Barques recalls this past, and fishermen can sometimes be seen preparing their nets there. Hotels, apartments, holiday homes, restaurants and small shops are now also part of the resort. There is no significant nightlife; Pollença and Port de Pollença offer livelier alternatives.

The resort itself is built on different levels, some of them steep. You should therefore expect steps as well as short climbs and descents between the streets, accommodation and coves. This is especially important if you are travelling with a pushchair or have limited mobility.

The dimensions in the Balearic Islands beach catalogue refer to its listing for Cala Sant Vicent. The individual coves have their own, considerably smaller beach areas, so the 370 metres should not be understood as a continuous stretch of sand.

Which coves belong to Cala Sant Vicenç?

Cala Sant Vicenç is generally considered to include Cala Barques, Cala Clara, Cala Molins and Cala Carbó. Some descriptions focus only on the three central beaches of Barques, Clara and Molins; Cala Carbó lies slightly farther east or beyond Cala Molins and is sometimes treated separately because of its rocky, unspoilt character.

Cala Barques is centrally located and is one of the larger and better-equipped coves. The beach consists of fine sand, although there may also be pebbles where you enter the water. Sun loungers and parasols are available for hire, and lifeguards are on duty during the season. Restaurants and bars are located directly beside or close to the cove. Pedal boats are also available for hire. Access leads down via steps from the area around the main road and car park.

Cala Clara is reached by a short path from Cala Barques. It is the smallest of the central coves and, depending on the section of beach, consists of sand, pebbles and stones. There are no public facilities directly on the beach. The rocks make the cove suitable for snorkelling, and crabs are among the creatures you can spot between the stones. Access is via steps.

Cala Molins is a light, fine-sand beach and is especially popular in summer. Sun loungers and parasols are available for hire. Lifeguards are on duty during the peak season or on a seasonal basis. Toilets, showers, shops and places to eat and drink are located nearby. Kayak hire and other leisure activities are also available. A ramp on the right-hand side provides easier access for people with limited mobility.

Cala Carbó is the most natural of the four coves. It is surrounded by rocks and has a stony or pebble-covered shoreline. There are no beach services. Access is via steps and an uneven path; this cove is not a suitable choice for small children or non-swimmers.

Note: If you want comfort and short distances to places to eat and drink, Cala Barques or Cala Molins are better options. Cala Carbó is suitable if you prefer a simpler rocky cove without services.

How do you get to Cala Sant Vicenç?

You can reach Cala Sant Vicenç by car via the Ma-2200 and the signposted turn-off from the road between Pollença and Port de Pollença. From Palma or the airport, the route initially heads towards Inca and Alcúdia via the Ma-13. Then continue towards Pollença and follow the signs to Cala Sant Vicenç.

A frequently used turn-off is on the Ma-2200 at kilometre 59. The distance from Palma Airport is around 67 kilometres. Depending on traffic and your exact starting point, you should allow approximately 45 to 50 minutes for the journey.

By public transport, bus route 321 serves Cala Sant Vicenç and connects the resort with Pollença and Port de Pollença. Cala Barques is only a short walk from the bus stop. Travelling from the airport is possible with transfers; you should allow approximately two hours.

As timetables and routes may be adjusted seasonally, check the current connection before departure. This is especially important for return journeys in the evening.

Where can you park at Cala Sant Vicenç?

Cala Sant Vicenç has free parking near the beaches and along the resort’s streets. There is a free car park within a short walk of Cala Barques. Additional parking spaces can be found on the surrounding streets, although the route to the beach may include steps.

A larger free car park is located above Cala Molins. From there, steps lead down to the cove; there is also a ramp on the right-hand side. To visit Cala Carbó, you can also use the car park at Cala Molins or look for a permitted parking space along the road.

According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, Cala Sant Vicent has high seasonal occupancy. Spaces close to the beaches may therefore be limited during busy periods. No definite statement can be made about availability at particular times.

Note: Choose the car park according to the cove you want to visit. Cala Barques and Cala Molins each have nearby parking, while Cala Clara and Cala Carbó can only be reached on foot via paths or steps.

What are the water, sand and swimming conditions like?

The water at Cala Sant Vicenç is very clear, but strong winds and bad weather can produce high waves. The exposed location makes the coves more vulnerable to strong winds than well-sheltered calas. Swimming is prohibited when conditions require it; lifeguards at Cala Barques and Cala Molins monitor the situation seasonally and warn visitors of hazards.

Cala Barques and Cala Molins have fine sand and are considered the more comfortable swimming coves under normal conditions. At Cala Barques, the seabed where you enter the water is partly sandy and partly stony. Cala Molins has a gently shelving, sandy entrance and is therefore often chosen by families.

Cala Clara is smaller and has stones or pebbles as well as sand. Its rocks make it interesting for snorkelling, but it offers less comfortable space for lying down. Cala Carbó is considerably stonier. Larger stones make entering the water more difficult; water shoes can make access more comfortable.

Snorkelling and diving are popular activities around Cala Sant Vicenç. Dives take place mainly during the peak season. Some dive sites in the surrounding area reach depths of approximately twelve metres and are also suitable for beginners. Dive centres can be found in Port de Pollença, among other places.

Warning: Always observe flags, barriers and lifeguard instructions. In strong winds or high waves, the coves are not suitable for children, and a swimming ban applies regardless of your swimming ability.

Is Cala Sant Vicenç suitable for families and people with limited mobility?

Cala Molins and Cala Barques are the best options for families, provided the wind and waves are calm. Cala Molins has a gently shelving, sandy entrance to the water and is a good choice within Cala Sant Vicenç for families with small children. Cala Barques also slopes relatively gently, although the entrance to the water can be stony.

Cala Clara offers little space, has no public facilities directly on the beach and is accessed via steps. It is therefore less comfortable than Molins or Barques for a long beach day with small children. Cala Carbó has uneven access and large stones along the shore; it is not suitable for toddlers or non-swimmers.

There are clear differences in accessibility. Cala Molins has a ramp on the right-hand side, making it the most accessible of the four coves. Cala Barques and Cala Clara are not wheelchair-accessible because of their steps. Cala Carbó is also only partly accessible due to its steps and uneven path.

The entire resort is built on slopes. Even short routes may therefore include inclines or descents. If you need the most level access possible, Cala Molins is the most suitable choice within Cala Sant Vicenç.

What facilities are available?

The most extensive beach facilities are found at Cala Barques and Cala Molins. Both coves offer sun loungers and parasols for hire, and lifeguards are on duty during the swimming season. Restaurants, bars and hotels are located nearby.

Cala Barques also offers pedal boats. Restaurants around the cove serve fish, seafood, paella and other Mediterranean dishes. Some terraces look directly over the sea and the Cavall Bernat massif.

Facilities at Cala Molins include toilets, showers and litter bins. Shops and bars are nearby. Kayaks are available for hire, and diving and other leisure activities are also offered.

Cala Clara has no public facilities directly on the beach. Shops, bars and restaurants are nevertheless only a few minutes’ walk away. Cala Carbó has no sun-lounger hire, lifeguards, toilets or food and drink services.

The resort itself has small shops, supermarkets, a pharmacy, restaurants and various types of accommodation. Shopping options are limited and primarily geared towards daily needs and visitors. Further shopping facilities can be found along the road between Pollença and Port de Pollença.

You should not rely on natural shade on the sandy areas. Parasols are available for hire at Cala Barques and Cala Molins; Cala Clara and Cala Carbó have no comparable beach service.

When is the best time to visit Cala Sant Vicenç and how busy does it get?

The swimming season is suitable for a beach day with full services, although occupancy is high at this time according to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue. Cala Molins is especially popular in summer. Cala Barques also attracts many beachgoers because of its central location, restaurants and beach services.

Cala Clara is regularly visited despite its small size. It may feel quieter than the two main equipped coves, but it also offers correspondingly little space for lying down. Cala Carbó is the least visited of the four coves even during peak season, but it has no beach services and entering the water is more challenging.

Lifeguards, hire services and water sports are seasonal. At Cala Barques and Cala Molins, supervision and services are available mainly during the peak or swimming season; year-round operation is not guaranteed.

Besides visitor numbers, the wind determines the quality of a beach day. In calm weather, the water is clear and ideal for swimming or snorkelling. Strong Tramuntana winds or storms can produce high waves, making swimming dangerous or prohibited.

If you want to explore several coves, you can choose your spot according to the conditions on the day. This is one of the practical advantages of Cala Sant Vicenç: Barques, Clara and Molins lie close together, while Cala Carbó offers a rockier alternative slightly farther away.

What can you do near Cala Sant Vicenç?

Around Cala Sant Vicenç, you can hike, watch birds, snorkel, dive or kayak. Coves Blanques is one of the best-known hiking destinations. The route is considered an easy walk of approximately one hour and offers views towards Punta Galera, Castell del Rei, Cala Castell and Cala Estremer.

Another well-known route is the Camí dels Presos, the prisoners’ path. It was built by prisoners during the Spanish Civil War. Routes towards Puig de l’Àguila are also among the area’s hiking options.

The area between Cala Sant Vicenç and Port de Pollença is suitable for birdwatching. Black vultures occur there; during migration, you may also spot Eleonora’s falcons, peregrine falcons, swifts and nightingales.

On the water, you can hire kayaks at Cala Molins and explore the coves from the coast. Cala Barques offers pedal boats, while the rocky areas around Cala Clara and Cala Carbó are used for snorkelling. Several operators offering organised dives are based in nearby Port de Pollença.

Pollença and Port de Pollença are also the closest destinations if you want more restaurants, shopping or evening entertainment. A market takes place in Pollença on Sunday mornings; Port de Pollença also has a market selling food, clothing and souvenirs.
