Es Caló des Pou is a small sandy cove nestled deep within Cala Llonga near Cala d’Or. Its appeal lies less in untouched wilderness than in a rarely found pleasant combination: fine, pale sand, sheltered water, palm trees along the back of the beach, and short distances to parking, restaurants, and the marina. The Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue lists the beach as 40 metres long and 50 metres wide. This means that the waterline is short, while the sandy area extends comparatively far inland. The name Caleta des Pou is also commonly used.

Residential properties and holiday homes surround the cove, although development remains limited according to the Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue. Es Fortí, a former military fortress dating from 1730, overlooks the coast. Despite the generally peaceful atmosphere, you should expect plenty of beachgoers in summer: the catalogue classifies seasonal occupancy as high. Es Caló des Pou is therefore particularly suitable if you are looking for an uncomplicated beach day with sand, a gentle entry into the water, and facilities—and are prepared to arrive early for a good spot.

Where exactly is Es Caló des Pou?

Es Caló des Pou lies in south-eastern Mallorca on the inner edge of Cala Llonga, near Cala Egos, Es Fortí, and the marina of Cala d’Or.

Different sources assign the beach to different localities. The Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue lists Cala Ferrera as the locality or municipal area. The official Balearic Islands tourism portal, however, lists the beach at 07660 Santanyí and describes its location between the Cala d’Or holiday resort and the natural harbour of Portopetro. On maps and in beach guides, the cove is often assigned to the Es Fortí or Cala Egos area within the municipality of Santanyí.

For finding your way locally, the names Cala d’Or, Cala Egos, Es Fortí, Cala Llonga, and Caló des Pou are therefore more helpful than Cala Ferrera. According to the Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue, the cove is about two kilometres from the centre of Cala d’Or. The official island portal gives distances of 3.2 kilometres from Portopetro and 15 kilometres from Santanyí.

Despite its location in a holiday area, the cove is small and compact. Palm trees grow behind the sand, while residential properties and holiday homes make up most of the surrounding buildings. The Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue also identifies the beach as part of a protected natural area but does not provide a more specific designation.

What is this small cove like?

Es Caló des Pou is a sheltered, family-oriented resort cove with a generally peaceful atmosphere, but without the secluded character of a natural beach.

The cove lies far inside the elongated Cala Llonga. As a result, it is less directly exposed to the open sea than many coves on the south-eastern coast. Pale sand, palm trees, and the surrounding low-rise buildings define the setting. Behind the beach, you will find areas with natural shade from the palm trees. Depending on the season, sun loungers and parasols are set up closer to the water.

The short shoreline and the sandy area extending far inland give Es Caló des Pou an unusual shape. If you want to lie near the water, you will share a comparatively narrow strip with other beachgoers. The atmosphere becomes quieter farther back, although the shaded spots beneath the palm trees are limited and therefore in demand.

Es Caló des Pou is not a party beach. There is no designated water sports centre directly on the beach. At the same time, the surrounding area is clearly geared towards tourism: hotels, apartments, private holiday homes, shops, and the Marina de Cala d’Or are nearby. Rather than a secluded rocky cove, you get a compact beach with short distances and a more relaxed location within the resort.

How do you get to Es Caló des Pou, and where can you park?

Es Caló des Pou is easy to reach by car by following signs in Cala d’Or towards Cala Egos, Es Fortí, or Caló des Pou.

The Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue explicitly describes access by car as straightforward. There is a small free car park by the beach, and you can also look for parking spaces in the surrounding streets. The official island portal notes that access from the car park to the beach is via steps. This final section may therefore be difficult for pushchairs, wheelchairs, or people with severely restricted mobility, even though general access is considered easy.

During the high season, the limited number of parking spaces near the beach is not always sufficient for demand. Particularly in July and August, the spaces may already be occupied by late morning. Your chances are better early in the morning. The parking situation may also ease later in the afternoon when the first day visitors leave.

For public transport, it is best to check current connections to Cala Egos or Es Fortí on the day of travel. Routes, stops, and timetables may change depending on the season.

Warning: “Free parking” does not mean that a space will always be available. The car park is small, and the beach’s seasonal occupancy is classified as high.

What are the sand, water, and entry like?

Es Caló des Pou offers fine, pale sand, a mostly gentle entry, and generally sheltered water due to its location within Cala Llonga.

The central entry into the sea is over sand. The seabed slopes gradually, allowing you to walk slowly into deeper water. This is pleasant for families, older beachgoers, and anyone who prefers to avoid a sudden drop into deeper water. Rocks and areas of seagrass appear along the sides of the cove; water shoes may be useful there, but they are not considered necessary for the central sandy entry.

At a depth of about five metres, the Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue describes a seabed of sand and algae or seagrass. Together with the sheltered location, this also makes the cove a suitable anchorage. Marina de Cala d’Or is only 0.1 nautical miles away, and boats may be travelling or anchored in the wider Cala Llonga area.

The central area in front of the sandy beach is best suited to swimming. Snorkellers are more likely to explore the rocky sides, where the seabed is more varied. There is no organised water sports centre directly on the beach. Wind may still create movement in the water; the sheltered location does not guarantee completely calm bathing conditions at all times.

Warning: Keep a close eye on children even where the entry is gentle. The water becomes deeper farther out, and Cala Llonga is also used by boats.

Is Es Caló des Pou suitable for children?

Es Caló des Pou is well suited to families with children thanks to its fine sand, gentle entry, and sheltered location.

Its compact size makes it easy to keep your bearings, and the seabed in the central beach area is predominantly sandy. The water is often calm, and the entry begins comparatively shallow. Toilets, showers, food and drink options, and the short distance to the car park also make a family beach day easier.

The palm trees along the back of the beach are also practical, providing natural shade at certain times. This area lies farther from the waterline and is especially popular with families. However, the shaded area is limited. If shade is important to you, you should arrive early or bring your own sun protection.

The steps at the entrance are the main disadvantage for families with pushchairs. The small cove can also become crowded during the high season. When that happens, there is little space along the short waterline between towels, loungers, and playing children. Families looking for plenty of room or a long, open sandy beach will not find the same possibilities here as at a large Playa.

What facilities are available at the beach?

Depending on the season, Es Caló des Pou has sun loungers, parasols, showers, toilets, and a small beach bar or kiosk.

The facilities are extensive for a cove of this size. Two areas closer to the water are reserved for rental loungers and parasols, while sandy spaces between them and farther back remain available for your own towels. The beach bar serves drinks and simple meals. A supermarket is located nearby, about 300 metres away, where you can buy water, snacks, or forgotten beach items.

Natural shade is mainly available beneath the palm trees at the back of the beach. It moves with the position of the sun and is not sufficient for every visitor. The palm trees are therefore no substitute for reliable sun protection, especially if you plan to stay for several hours.

Toilets and showers are among the facilities. Operating times and availability may vary for lounger and parasol rental, the bar, and other seasonal services. Outside the high season, do not rely on every facility being open.

There is no designated water sports centre directly on the sand. Es Caló des Pou is geared more towards bathing, relaxed swimming, and occasional snorkelling along the rocky sides.

When is the best time to visit, and how crowded does it get?

Es Caló des Pou is generally most pleasant early in the morning; in summer, visitor numbers rise noticeably from late morning onwards.

The Balearic Islands Beach Catalogue classifies seasonal occupancy as high. The detailed official description, however, refers to a medium-high number of local and international beachgoers. What is certain is that the short waterline and limited parking make the beach feel crowded more quickly than a large Playa.

Es Caló des Pou is usually particularly peaceful before 10 a.m. This is when you have the best chance of finding a parking space, a spot close to the water, and shade beneath the palm trees. By late morning and early afternoon, the sandy area and lounger sections fill up, especially in July and August.

Some day visitors leave later in the afternoon. Spaces may then become available again, and finding parking can sometimes be easier. Towards evening, the light enters the cove more from the side; it is therefore not a place with an unobstructed view of the sun setting over the open sea.

If you visit outside summer, the cove may be significantly quieter. At the same time, lounger rental, the beach bar, and other services are seasonal. For a classic beach day with complete facilities, the high season offers the greatest likelihood that everything will be open—but also the largest crowds.

What can you see around Es Caló des Pou?

Es Fortí, Marina de Cala d’Or, Cala Egos, and other coastal sections of Cala Llonga are located directly around Es Caló des Pou.

The most distinctive sight is Es Fortí on the rocky coastal headland. The military fortress dates from 1730 and was equipped with four cannons. Its thick walls facing the sea were intended to withstand artillery attacks. The site was later opened to the public and used as a kind of museum. The official island portal also mentions exhibitions, concerts, and other cultural events held there.

At the fortress, there is a commemorative plaque for Pep Costa Ferrer, known as “Centinela de es Fortí”. According to the official description, it honours the architectural project and construction of the Cala d’Or development.

The nearby Marina de Cala d’Or is the closest marina. Restaurants and bars surround the harbour, making it easy to combine a beach visit with a detour to the marina. Cala Egos is also within easy reach. If you are looking for more natural surroundings, the Mondragó and S’Amarador beaches in Mondragó Natural Park are further options.

Coastal paths run between Es Fortí and Cala Llonga, offering views across the cove. Their condition and accessibility may change, so follow local paths and signs.

What practical details should you know for your beach day?

Arrive early, expect steps, and bring your own sun protection if you do not want to depend on finding a free spot beneath the palm trees or renting a seasonal parasol.

Es Caló des Pou is straightforward but small. For that reason, a few decisions can make a noticeable difference: finding parking is usually easier in the morning, the sand is less crowded, and there is a wider choice of shaded spots. You will not normally need water shoes for the central sandy entry. They may be more comfortable if you want to snorkel or walk along the rocky sides.

The access via steps is an important consideration for people with restricted mobility. The short distance from the car park does not indicate whether the route is manageable for each individual. You should also take this section into account if you have a pushchair.

Bring enough drinking water and sun protection, even though the beach bar and supermarket are nearby. Opening times and rental services may depend on the season. The palm trees provide natural shade but cover only part of the back of the beach.

Whether dogs are permitted is not consistently documented. Check the current signs at the entrance. The same applies to possible seasonal rules, designated swimming areas, and information about boat traffic.
