Colònia de Sant Pere

Platja de Colònia de Sant Pere is a small sandy beach directly on the seafront promenade of the coastal village of the same name in north-eastern Mallorca. On one side is the protective breakwater of Club Nàutic Colònia de Sant Pere, while on the other the promenade leads to a rougher neighbouring cove. This combination of village beach, harbour and short distances sets it apart from the long resort beaches of the Bay of Alcúdia. Instead of large hotel complexes, the surroundings are characterised by homes, holiday accommodation, small hotels and waterfront restaurants.

The beach is particularly suitable if you want to combine swimming with a walk or a meal. Golden sand, relatively shallow water and the protection of the breakwater make the shoreline family-friendly. At the same time, you should not underestimate the sea: farther out, the waves can become significantly larger, and north-east of the beach surfers seek out precisely these rougher conditions. Where is Colònia de Sant Pere beach?

The beach lies in the municipality of Artà, directly beside the harbour of Colònia de Sant Pere and around ten kilometres from the town of Artà. It belongs to the Bay of Alcúdia and is located on Mallorca’s north-eastern coast.

Colònia de Sant Pere is the only tourism-oriented centre along the stretch of coast between Can Picafort and Capdepera, although the Balearic Islands beach catalogue describes its residential character as predominant. This explains the beach’s distinctive atmosphere: you are not swimming in front of a self-contained holiday resort, but right on the waterfront of a small coastal village. The harbour, promenade, restaurants and residential streets are all close together.

The harbour end of the beach is bordered by the breakwater of Club Nàutic Colònia de Sant Pere. A modern seafront promenade with benches, tamarisks and small terraces runs behind the sand. If you look only at the actual swimming area beside the harbour breakwater, Platja clearly feels like a small village beach rather than one of the kilometres-long stretches of sand farther west in the Bay of Alcúdia.

How do you get there and where can you park?

Getting there by car is straightforward: in Colònia de Sant Pere, follow the signs to the beach and harbour area. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue states that you can park your car free of charge in the beach area.

Additional parking is available in the streets behind the beach. Several beach descriptions consider finding a parking space there straightforward even in summer. However, this does not guarantee that a space will be available, especially as the beach is very busy during the season. Always pay attention to current signs, road markings and any time restrictions.

The driving distance from Port d’Alcúdia is given as around 30 kilometres, while Palma de Mallorca Airport is about 68 kilometres away. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, Artà is ten kilometres away. As the beach is directly within the village, there is no long nature trail or steep descent after parking.

What are the sand, water and swimming conditions like?

However, the protection does not apply equally to the entire bay: farther out, the waves can become larger, and on the north-eastern side of the breakwater the sea is often rougher.

Especially with children, remain close to the shore and reassess the conditions each time. The calm appearance of the small arc of sand can disguise the fact that the open bay beyond the protected area has stronger waves. North-east of Platja, surfers can be found precisely because of these waves.

No water sports activities are offered directly on the beach. If you simply want to swim, play in the shallower water or combine a quick dip with a walk around the harbour, Platja is more suitable than it is for a day with organised water sports.

Warning: The breakwater mainly calms the area close to the beach. Do not automatically swim far out simply because the water appears calm by the shore.

Is the beach suitable for children?

Platja de Colònia de Sant Pere is considered child-friendly because of its relatively shallow water near the shore, the sand and the breakwater. The compact beach is especially practical for younger children because the promenade and restaurants are directly behind it.

The sand is suitable for playing, although some areas may contain gravel or stones. The breakwater reduces the waves close to the beach. Outside this more sheltered section, however, significantly stronger waves may occur. Children should therefore always be supervised by the water and should not swim to the other side of the breakwater or far out into the bay.

The short distances are convenient: you can reach the beach from the parking area without a long walk, and drinks or ice cream are available from the restaurants along the promenade. As sun loungers and parasols are not available for hire, you need to bring your own sun protection for the family.

With high occupancy, the beach quickly becomes crowded within an area measuring 70 by 20 metres according to the catalogue. If children need space to play, an earlier visit is more practical than the most popular hours of a summer day. A specific time cannot be reliably recommended; the season, day of the week and weather are what matter.

What facilities are available directly at the beach?

There is a shower at the edge of the beach, while sun loungers and parasols are not available for hire. You should therefore bring your own beach mat and, if needed, a parasol.

The best infrastructure is not on the sand but directly behind it. Several restaurants and small terraces overlooking the water line the promenade. You can also buy drinks or ice cream for the beach there. Some restaurants are open particularly during the summer months; outside the main season, the choice may be more limited.

Benches along the promenade are partly shaded by tamarisks. This shade is pleasant for a break during a walk but does not replace reliable sun protection on the beach. You should not expect natural shade on the sand.

There are no water sports services directly at Platja. Sun loungers and parasols are also not available for hire. It is not possible to state reliably whether other facilities such as toilets or lifeguards will be available on the specific day of your visit. Follow the information signs at the entrance.

When is the best time to visit and how crowded does it get?

If you want more space, avoid the busiest periods of the summer season where possible. The Balearic Islands beach catalogue explicitly classifies seasonal occupancy as high.

This does not mean that Colònia de Sant Pere takes on the character of a large holiday resort. The village has only a few hotels but several holiday homes and apartments; residential properties predominate instead of extensive hotel complexes. In summer, both local families and holidaymakers stay here, while the harbour contains a few fishing boats but mainly yachts.

Precisely because the beach is small, it can quickly feel crowded despite the village’s comparatively understated appearance. If you are flexible, you can combine your beach visit with a walk along the promenade and move onto the sand once some space becomes available. An earlier start can also help, although no generally applicable time can be given.

A special date in the village is the evening of 29 June. The feast in honour of the patron saint Sant Pere is then celebrated with music, dancing and fireworks. If you visit at this time, expect the village to be livelier than usual. Another date is more suitable for a deliberately quiet beach day; if you want to experience the village atmosphere, this particular evening may be interesting.

What is near the beach?

Directly beside the beach are Club Nàutic Colònia de Sant Pere, the harbour and the seafront promenade with restaurants. You can therefore combine your beach visit with a short walk around the harbour and along the promenade without driving.

If you follow the promenade north-east from the harbour, you will reach the neighbouring Caló des Parral. This small cove differs considerably from Platja de Colònia de Sant Pere: its surface is described as coarse, dark sand or rocky, while the water is considered clear. The Torrent de sa Font des Parral flows into the sea there.

The transition from the fine, golden sand of the village beach to the darker and coarser neighbouring section reveals two different coastal landscapes within a short distance. Caló des Parral is therefore the most obvious alternative if the main Platja is too busy for you or if you want to extend your walk along the promenade. Whether conditions there are actually quieter depends on the particular day.

Artà is ten kilometres away. For a longer trip, the driving distance to Port d’Alcúdia is also given as around 30 kilometres. Within Colònia de Sant Pere itself, restaurants are mainly concentrated along the waterfront. Extensive nightlife, a wide range of commercial leisure activities and large hotel complexes do not define the village.

What practical information should you know before visiting?

Bring your own sun protection, stay close to the shore when there are waves and check the current signs at the entrance. This will prepare you for the key features of this small harbour beach.

As neither sun loungers nor parasols are available for hire, pack a towel or beach mat and your own source of shade. The tamarisks mainly shade benches along the promenade. Do not rely on them for a longer stay on the sand.

For swimmers, it is important to distinguish between the more sheltered shoreline and the more open bay. Stronger waves may occur on the north-eastern side, where surfers also use the conditions. You will not find organised water sports directly at Platja.

Conditions are challenging for boats. The seabed in this area consists of rocks and algae and is considered unsuitable for anchoring according to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue. Anchoring near Club Nàutic Colònia de Sant Pere is discouraged. With certain wind directions and on stormy days, entering the harbour facilities can also be problematic; the harbour may then be closed off.
