This irregular landscape is precisely what distinguishes the cove from the broad beaches of the main resort areas: come here if you want to experience a rugged coastline and can do without loungers, showers or water sports. A natural pool stands out in the rocky area; the alternative name Sa Banyera dels Ermitans also recalls the hermits of the Betlem chapel.

The cove forms part of the protected landscape of the Muntanyes d’Artà. Garrigue, maquis, small cliffs and fossilised dunes characterise this stretch of coast, while the Ermitage of Betlem and the 321-metre-high Sa Coassa lie above it. When swimming, vigilance matters more than comfort: the spot is not protected from waves, the ground consists of rock, stones, algae or Posidonia and isolated sandy areas, and there is no lifeguard service. Canons Banyera Ermitans is therefore more suitable for an independently planned nature stop than for a fully equipped beach day.

Where is Canons Banyera Ermitans?

Canons Banyera Ermitans lies within the municipality of Artà, in the Colònia de Sant Pere area near the Betlem development. According to the Balearic Islands beach catalogue, this stretch of coast in north-eastern Mallorca is around 16 kilometres from the town of Artà.

The cove lies between Sa Ferradura and Punta de Caló’s Cans, which is also known as Punta de Ca los Camps. The wider area includes the Ermitage of Betlem and the public land of the same name, around 300 metres above sea level. Sa Coassa rises above it to 321 metres.

Canons Banyera Ermitans belongs to the Área Natural de Especial Interés Muntanyes d’Artà, a natural landscape of special interest. Accordingly, the surroundings appear largely undeveloped: low shrubs, garrigue and maquis line a rugged coast with rocky outcrops, small cliffs and layers of fossil dunes.

This sandy and rocky stretch of coast is perceived differently depending on how its boundaries are defined. Use Colònia de Sant Pere or the Betlem development for orientation. There is no reliably signposted official parking area with a stated capacity for this small coastal spot. Parking is available in the surrounding area; whether spaces are available directly beside the access point can vary according to the season and time of day.

No public transport stop is designated directly at the cove. If you are travelling without a car, you should therefore plan the rest of your route carefully in advance and not rely on being able to get off directly beside the cove.

Note: The beach lies within a protected natural area. Use only recognisable access routes and permitted parking spaces, and do not block paths or entrances to properties.

The cove is not reliably protected from waves. Swimming can become dangerous when there is a swell. There are also fallen rocks, small cliffs and predominantly stony ground. Enter the water slowly and reassess how calm the sea actually is every time you visit.

There is no lifeguard service. This also means that nobody on site assesses current conditions or can intervene immediately if problems arise. Canons Banyera Ermitans is therefore only a sensible choice for small children and inexperienced swimmers when the water is calm and they are closely supervised.

Food and drinks are not available directly at the cove either. You will find restaurants in the nearby towns of Betlem and Colònia de Sant Pere. You should therefore bring your own food and drinks for your time at the beach and take all rubbish away with you.

You should not rely on natural shade either. Although low shrub vegetation grows in the surrounding area, no reliable shaded spots are designated. Parasols are not available for hire. Anyone planning to stay longer will therefore need to bring their own sun protection, provided it can be used safely without disturbing the protected ground.

The lack of facilities is not something that can be remedied spontaneously on site, but part of this cove’s character. Canons Banyera Ermitans will suit you if you are independent and expect very little infrastructure. If you are looking for toilets, showers, lifeguards or convenient lounger hire, you should choose a better-equipped beach.

When is the best time to visit?

Canons Banyera Ermitans is best visited when the sea is calm and you have enough time to assess the conditions on site. A fixed swimming season or operating period is of little relevance here because there is no beach equipment for hire and no lifeguard service.

Across Mallorca, May, June and September are generally considered months when beaches may be less crowded than during the height of summer. In July and August, many coves already become busy during the morning. At Canons Banyera Ermitans, even a moderate number of visitors can be noticeable because it is only ten metres wide.

Nearby places include Betlem, Colònia de Sant Pere, the Ermitage of Betlem and the coves of Cala Camp Vells, Sa Canova and Na Clara. The nearest harbour is the Port de Colònia de Sant Pere.

The Ermitage of Betlem lies above the coast. The site is associated with a religious community that lived a largely self-sufficient life there. The beach name Banyera dels Ermitans also recalls these hermits. The Ermitage and the public land of the same name lie around 300 metres above sea level.

The area around S’Aigo Dolça is archaeologically significant. A megalithic burial site there is listed in the Balearic Islands beach catalogue as one of Mallorca’s oldest architectural finds. It lies near the sea inlet of the same name beside Sa Ferradura.

Cala Camp Vells, Sa Canova and Na Clara are options for further swimming stops. These places differ in access and character, but can serve as alternatives if conditions at Canons Banyera Ermitans are unsuitable. Restaurants and other services are concentrated in Betlem and Colònia de Sant Pere, not at the cove itself.

For Canons Banyera Ermitans, you mainly need sturdy water shoes, water, food and your own sun protection. Because of the rocky ground, lack of supervision and exposure to waves, you should not treat the beach like a sheltered family cove.

Water shoes are not mandatory, but they can be helpful on the ground described here, which consists of rocks, stones and isolated sandy areas. A snorkelling mask suits the varied seabed, although you should avoid snorkelling when there are waves.

There is no designated pet area for dogs. This does not automatically mean that bringing them is prohibited at all times of year. Pay attention to current signs at the access point and respect any seasonal restrictions or rules intended to protect the natural area.

You should not anchor a boat in front of the cove.
