Mallorca tourism: Balearics eye 20m tourist record

The Balearics could reach 20 million tourists by the end of 2026, setting a record for the islands. Speaking in Palma on Monday, Tourism Minister Jaume Bauzá said the total was possible — but warned that the headline number does not tell the whole story for Mallorca and the rest of the archipelago.

Visitors are making more trips but staying for fewer days, Bauzá said. Overnight stays are falling, and that can push up the number of visits through airports even while holidays become shorter. He said airport figures should not be treated as the only measure of tourism.

Bauzá also attacked Spain's Government over a proposed law that would give the Balearic Government a role in running the airports. The Balearic Parliament approved the proposal at the end of April, but the Government rejected its consideration in the Congress of Deputies.

Asked whether a greater role could mean cutting flights, the minister did not give a direct answer. He said the Balearic Government wants “a voice and a vote” in the management of Aena, and will keep pressing that demand regardless of who governs Spain.
