€15,000 fine: Ibiza police tow illegal passenger van
€15,000 fine: police in Eivissa, Ibiza, have taken a van off the road after finding it was carrying passengers without authorisation. The driver was reported for illegal activity in passenger transport and the vehicle was removed by tow truck.
The case was the biggest intervention during a municipal police operation on Friday night into Saturday. Officers were checking VTC vehicles — pre-booked hire cars — on Passeig Joan Carles I, Eivissa Town Hall said.
Two operations in one week
The checks formed part of the town's special “fourth shift”, a scheme intended to put more officers on the streets and target areas needing closer inspection, including illegal passenger transport.
In the first operation, on Wednesday, local police and mobility inspectors from the Consell d'Eivissa checked 62 vehicles and issued 16 reports. Twelve were for not wearing seat belts, while two concerned breaches of island entry and circulation authorisations.
Officers also opened criminal proceedings against a driver suspected of drink-driving after the legal limit was exceeded. They collected fines worth €650 during that operation.
Three seat-belt fines paid on the spot
The Friday-to-Saturday operation was run by municipal officers alone. Alongside the VTC checks, they inspected restraint systems and seat belts.
Three seat-belt reports were issued and paid immediately, totalling €300. The van carrying passengers without authorisation led to the €15,000 penalty and its removal.
