€60 ticket: Madrid protects local transport budgets
Spain’s €60 nationwide ticket could bring compensation for regional and local transport bodies that join it. Madrid’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility published the framework in the Official State Gazette on Tuesday. Joining remains voluntary.
The scheme is designed to make tickets mutually recognised across Spain. The ministry says state funding can cover revenue lost when fares are brought into line, as well as extra costs if local networks face an exceptional rise in passengers.
No payment amounts have been set. The sums and settlement process will be decided in agreements signed by authorities that opt in, or under later rules. Those arrangements will take account of ticket sales and increased use of services included in the scheme.
The ministry also plans a digital platform to hold shared data and check whether tickets issued by Renfe, state coach services and local operators work together.
For now, the ticket costs €60 a month, or €30 for young people. It is currently valid only on state intercity coach services and Renfe’s Cercanías, Rodalies and Media Distancia trains.
