Police charge 200–300 Abascal protesters in Maó
Maó, on the Spanish island of Menorca: Spanish National Police charge a crowd of 200 to 300 people after a rally by Vox leader Santiago Abascal on Friday, 23 October 2026. Police sources say officers moved to clear protesters from the area around the square where he had spoken. No one had been arrested shortly before 22.00.
The CGT trade union had called the protest against Abascal’s visit. Police had planned an operation to try to prevent trouble. Protesters could be heard during the rally, and Abascal repeatedly referred to them, calling them “Sánchez’s militias” and accusing them of threats and violence.
Vox says about 300 people surrounded its van after the event in what the party calls another attempt to disrupt it. A video released by Vox shows Abascal and members of his team inside a vehicle as people shout at them and strike its windows. The Assemblea de Joves de Menorca has criticised the police action.
The confrontation follows a protest against Abascal in A Coruña on Wednesday, when two people were arrested and more than ten injured amid disorder and police charges.
