Mallorca waiters’ tips: Abascal vows to end tax
Mallorca waiters could keep more of their tips: Vox leader Santiago Abascal promises to scrap the tax on them if his party takes power. He makes the pledge on Saturday, 24 October, at a rally outside Mallorca Cathedral in Palma, Mallorca, ahead of Spain’s general election on 29 November. About 1,500 people enter the area in front of the cathedral as Spain’s National Police control access.
Tips and pensions
Abascal says people in the Balearic Islands know how much tips matter to hospitality workers. His proposal is a campaign pledge, not a change to the tax rules.
He also promises that pensions will continue to be paid. He argues that lower taxes and cuts to political spending would help sustain the system.
Housing and the election
Abascal asks voters for a large enough majority to make him prime minister. He says he is not standing to become deputy to Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the conservative People’s Party.
On migration, Abascal calls for the swift expulsion of people who have committed crimes. He also advocates what he calls “remigration” for people he says come to Spain to live on public support.
Vox’s Balearic candidate, Maribel Cerezo, calls for more land to be made available for housing and fewer administrative hurdles to building it. She proposes removing taxes on a first home so that young people and families can find somewhere to live on Mallorca.
The Palma rally passes without incident. The previous night in Maó, National Police officers pushed protesters out of the area around a Vox event.
