Abascal attacks Sánchez's TV jokes at Menorca rally
Maó, on the island of Menorca: Vox leader Santiago Abascal attacks Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez over a television interview at a rally on Friday, 23 October. Abascal says Sánchez tried to make jokes on Thursday’s TVE programme La Revuelta despite, he claims, having lied to and betrayed Spaniards. He also accuses people around Sánchez of stealing from them.
Jewellery row enters the argument
During the interview, presenter David Broncano asked Sánchez about jewellery worth more than €1 million found in the office of former prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. Sánchez replied that prime ministers sometimes do not know what gifts they receive.
Abascal alleges that Zapatero took the jewellery from state property and moved it to a safe at the headquarters of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party. Spain’s Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office raised the possibility on Friday that Zapatero committed a misappropriation offence by keeping it.
Vox looks to the election
Abascal also says protests at Vox events this week in A Coruña and Avilés, in Asturias, were intended to silence his party. The protests led to disturbances, police action, arrests and injuries, according to Europa Press.
He sets out Vox’s priorities for the general election: giving Spanish citizens priority, cutting regulation and taxes, and what the party calls “remigration” — returning people without legal immigration status, as well as legally admitted foreigners who commit crimes or live on state benefits. He urges supporters to vote on 29 November rather than rely on polls predicting a comfortable majority for the People’s Party and Vox.
