Mallorca's Son Espases records 677 abortions by July
On Mallorca, Son Espases University Hospital records 677 abortions from January to July 2026 — the highest total reported by a public hospital in the Balearic Islands. Across the islands, public hospitals carry out 1,939 abortions in that period. The Balearic Islands Health Department gave the figures in response to a parliamentary question from unaffiliated MP Agustín Buades.
The figures by hospital
Of the 1,939 abortions, 1,920 were medical and 19 were surgical. On Mallorca, Son Llàtzer University Hospital recorded 329, Manacor Hospital 263 and Inca Hospital 109. Can Misses Hospital on Eivissa recorded 343, while Mateu Orfila Hospital on Menorca recorded 218.
An MP calls for more support
Buades said the total would exceed the 3,347 abortions recorded in 2025 if the current pace continues. He argued that the Balearic Islands lack protection and support for mothers.
He welcomed Balearic president Marga Proehsn’s announcement of temporary accommodation for pregnant women and mothers with children who need it because of financial or social difficulties, or a lack of family and social support. But he said the proposal had come late in the government’s term. Buades said he would watch for the centre to open and for a wider family and maternity support plan that, according to the Health Department, is close to being announced.
