Balearics hit hard by Adam as Catalonia braces for rain
DANA Adam hits the Balearic Islands and Spain’s Valencian Community hard: rainfall in the affected areas tops 600 litres per square metre in 12 hours, and Catalonia is next. On Monday 19 October, Catalonia’s regional president, Salvador Illa, urges “great caution”, though forecasts suggest the storm will be less intense there.
Rain is expected across Catalonia from midday Monday until early Tuesday. Totals could reach 100 litres per square metre. Illa says the forecast rates rainfall intensity over 30-minute periods at 4 out of 6, but stresses that Catalonia is not expected to see what the Balearics and Valencia have faced. He compares the rain in the areas already hit with Barcelona’s average rainfall for an entire year.
Catalonia’s Operational Coordination Centre, Cecat, is meeting on Monday morning. The civil protection service, Protecció Civil, is due to issue warnings in the coming hours. Illa has also sent messages of solidarity to Valencian president Juanfran Pérez Llorca and Balearic president Marga Prohens.
