Mallorca airport row: MÉS calls to oust Aena

MÉS per Mallorca wants Aena removed from the Balearic Islands’ airports and the Balearic Islands Government to take over their management. The party’s parliamentary spokesman, Lluís Apesteguia, made the call in Palma on Monday. He referred to Sunday’s demonstrations in Palma, Mallorca, and Eivissa, Ibiza, against airport expansion plans.

Apesteguia called the protests “exemplary” and said airport self-management was their main demand. He said those taking part were standing up to the interests of the powerful, which he said Aena represents.

He said protesters were defending the ability to live decently in their homes, make it to the end of the month and carry out their economic activity. “It was about demonstrating in favour of life and against the particular interests of some,” he said.

Apesteguia accused Aena of working mainly to pay dividends to its shareholders. Since the company still has a significant amount of public capital, he said, it should serve the interests of the population.

MÉS per Mallorca is seeking institutions with the power to decide what happens at the islands’ airports, alongside a different economic model. Apesteguia said the government led by Marga Prohens appeared set on preserving the current model and would do “little” for airport self-management.
