Mallorca airport growth: Aena curb bid goes to Congress
A plan to curb Aena’s airport growth in Mallorca and across the Balearics is waiting for a decision in Madrid. In Palma on Friday, the Balearic Government defended its law for joint airport management, passed by the regional parliament at the end of April. Spain’s Congress board will decide next Tuesday whether the bill can enter parliamentary scrutiny.
The Spanish Government has objected to the proposal, arguing that it could cut Aena’s income. It says any shortfall would need to be covered with money from the State Secretariat for Transport and Sustainable Mobility.
Deputy regional spokeswoman Antònia Maria Estarellas said the Balearic Government did not yet know the exact content of the document behind the objection. But she said the decision should not come down only to whether Aena has more or less money.
The islands’ government sees joint management as a way to bring Aena into line with its policy of limiting growth. Estarellas said the documents needed to be examined before the government commented further.
Sumar’s two representatives will vote in favour of starting the process. That leaves the four People’s Party deputies and Congress president Francina Armengol holding the key to Tuesday’s decision.
Before the Balearic Parliament approved the bill, regional president Marga Prohens spoke to People’s Party leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo to seek backing. The then regional government spokesman, Antoni Costa, said the administration had support from the party leadership in Madrid.
