Mallorca tourism row: Prohens rejects more Aena passengers
Aena investment in the Balearics must not be tied to higher passenger numbers, Marga Prohens says, as a tourism row breaks out in the Balearic Parliament in Palma, Mallorca, on Tuesday. The regional president says a document on Aena's forecasts makes the position clear. PSIB spokesman Iago Negueruela says she will become “the president of 20 million tourists”.
Clash over Aena forecasts
Prohens says her government took five minutes to produce the document after the PSOE claimed it had sought investment for further expansion. She insists the Balearics wants investment, but not if it brings an increase in passengers.
Negueruela says Prohens has shifted her language on the islands' saturation, moving from calls for courage to talk of restraint. He also attacks her criticism of Aena while new routes are opening, saying their purpose is to bring in more tourists.
50 million tourists by 2031
Prohens says the central government wants 50 million tourists to reach the islands in 2031, referring to Aena's forecasts.
She points to a Mallorca Council study on the island's capacity, which is intended to reduce tourist accommodation places. Prohens also says the tourism restraint decree is working, arguing that her government has approved no new places while the PSIB approved 115,000.
