Mallorca is not among the places named in Spain’s new plan for 2,500 affordable homes. On Tuesday, 27 October, the government approves €201 million in direct grants for private developers to build them on public land. State housing company Casa 47 will put forward sites for around 30 projects, including in Málaga, Sevilla, Valencia, Cantabria and Guadalajara.

A limit on rents

Rents for the new homes must not exceed 30% of the income of the household living in them. The plan calls for stable, long-term rents for periods of up to 75 years. Housing minister Isabel Rodríguez says the conditions will remain under public control throughout the homes’ lifetimes.

Public land, private builders

Casa 47 will provide public land that is already prepared for building, while private developers carry out the construction. Direct grants can cover up to 60% of the investment. If a project needs more support, Casa 47 will put it out to tender itself rather than use the public-private scheme.

For now, the government has named no project on Mallorca.
