AI tool to forecast flight cancellations wins €40,000

€40,000 for AI to forecast flight cancellations: Spain’s air navigation manager Enaire is backing Whitebox’s Sky Truth tool, which estimates the likelihood of cancellations and operational delays. Enaire announced the award on 27 October, alongside a second €40,000 prize for Airspace Unlimited. It chose the two start-ups from 85 entries.

Sky Truth is designed to help Enaire decide more precisely when to open and close sections of airspace. Airspace Unlimited’s Freely Routing project takes a different approach to flight planning: it will provide early information on route availability, capacity and weather. The company aims to use that information to improve routes and cut fuel use and emissions.

Both start-ups will join a six-month programme guided by Enaire and its research and innovation subsidiary, CRIDA. Only after that will Enaire consider commissioning the tools for operational use. Neither has been cleared for deployment yet.
