Thirty-seven Meliá hotels in the Balearic Islands are set to benefit as the group expands its technology partnership with Telefónica. Artificial intelligence, or AI, will help automate work and deal with faults faster at almost 9,000 technical devices across hotels and company sites. The agreement, announced in Madrid on 10 September, covers more than 250 Meliá properties in 40 countries.

The deal builds on a support platform run by Telefónica for hotel staff requests. It handles about 240,000 requests a year, with more than 70% already dealt with automatically. The system also supports more than 12,000 AI-assisted conversations each month.

New predictive tools are planned to take on more routine processes and speed up the handling of technical incidents. The wider package includes cloud services, connectivity, workplace management, functional support and cyber security to protect the group’s information.

Balearic Islands lead Meliá’s connected hotels

Meliá and Telefónica already have 150 connected hotels in Spain. The Balearic Islands have the largest number named in the agreement, with 37, ahead of Andalusia’s 33 and the Canary Islands’ 19.

Madrid, Catalonia and the Valencian Community each have 16 connected hotels. Meliá’s chief information officer, Antonio Báez, said the technology work is intended to make day-to-day operations easier for hotel staff and improve customer service.
