AI in Mallorca schools: minister warns of learning risks

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

On Mallorca and across the Balearic Islands, artificial intelligence could make some pupils’ difficulties worse if it replaces their own effort, independence and critical thinking, education minister Antoni Vera warns. But he says AI is not to blame for falling academic results. Vera makes the distinction on 2 October at the European EducaIA forum in Santiago de Compostela.

He wants schools to strengthen reading, writing and maths from the earliest years. Measures he highlights across the Balearic Islands include changes to the curriculum, more support for language learning and extra help for pupils.

Vera argues that AI can have a place in classrooms, but schools should assess its use first, consider the educational evidence and make sure it helps pupils learn, according to a statement from the Balearic education department.
