Mallorca aid: families await €9m from €84m plan

Families in Mallorca are still waiting for support from a €9 million fund intended for vulnerable households, MÉS per Mallorca said on 10 September. At a sitting of the Island Council of Mallorca in Palma, spokesperson Catalina Inés Perelló accused the ruling People's Party (PP) of turning an €84 million aid plan into “propaganda”. The package was announced in March to soften the economic effects of the Iran war.

Perelló said the aid counter was still at zero in August. She called on Island Council president Llorenç Galmés to state how many vulnerable families had received money, saying help must be opened for applications, awarded and paid before it reaches those who need it.

MÉS said the council had presented the plan as an urgent response, yet eight months later the promised support had not reached the families most in need. The party said this raised doubts over whether the announcement had been rushed or the scheme badly managed.

Galmés announced the €84 million package on 31 March, including €9 million for vulnerable families. A week later, the council withdrew files worth €17.5 million from its full sitting because they were not ready. A first phase of the plan was approved on 9 April.

Later that month, the council changed the conditions for social assistance. MÉS linked the move to a dispute with Vox and said applicants were required to have lived on Mallorca for five years. On 28 April, the island government announced a further €22.7 million aid package.

For MÉS, the sequence shows a government more focused on announcements and headlines than getting money to families.
