Air Europa tests fuel-saving flights to Brazil and Amsterdam
Two flights, one test: Air Europa is trying to cut fuel use and waste on routes from Madrid, Spain, to Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, and Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The Brazil flight has already flown; the Amsterdam flight is due on Friday. The trials are part of The Aviation Challenge, run by the SkyTeam airline alliance, which Air Europa has joined for the fifth year in a row.
Cutting fuel use and waste
A Boeing 787 Dreamliner flew the Brazil route, while one of Air Europa’s new Boeing 737 Max aircraft is due to fly to Amsterdam. The airline is using sustainable aviation fuel, adjusting flight routes and planning fuel loads. Its OptiClimb tool aims to reduce fuel use as the aircraft climbs.
Air Europa has also planned electric vehicles for ground operations and the removal of single-use materials on board. Passengers can check their flight’s carbon footprint and choose to contribute to certified climate projects.
Giving cabin parts another use
The airline’s Waste360 project will track waste from flights, catering and maintenance to find where it can throw less away. With Aire Cabin Solutions, Air Europa is also working to repair and reuse certain cabin parts instead of replacing them.
Passengers who check in lighter bags can earn status miles. Pilots will also take a course on operating more efficiently as part of their regular training.
Donations for homes in Brazil
On the Salvador de Bahia flight, passengers were invited to donate to TETO Brasil. The organisation builds emergency homes for people in vulnerable communities and supports community projects. The donation campaign will continue throughout October, with the aim of helping to build more homes for families in Salvador de Bahia.
