European air traffic: 39.28 million euros to automate
A 39.28 million euro project aims to let European air traffic control systems make routine decisions on their own. Artemisa launches in Brussels this week, with plans for new platforms to manage flights en route and around airports. Technology firm Indra coordinates the project with eight air navigation service providers in the iTEC alliance, the alliance said.
The aim is to reach Level 4 automation under standards set by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. At that level, systems can make and carry out routine decisions themselves, but only under defined operating conditions. Artemisa will also develop the existing iTEC SkyNex platform.
The European SESAR programme will fund 70% of the project, which is set to run for 36 months. The team plans to build open, modular systems that work with different platforms and to strengthen protection against cyberattacks when those platforms exchange information. The alliance has not announced a change to flights at any particular airport.
