Mallorca airports: Government vows to block expansion
The Balearic Government says it will oppose any airport investment that raises capacity, opening a fresh clash with AENA. Spokesman Antoni Costa repeated the stance in Palma on Friday after the Consell de Govern meeting. He said the government would not accept works that increase the potential flow of tourists.
Safety spending accepted, capacity rejected
Costa criticised what he called the inflexibility of AENA’s representatives. He said investment in safety and modernisation was welcome, but the government would fight projects aimed at expanding airport capacity.
PSIB points to July request
The socialist PSIB disputes the government’s account. Party sources said that in July 2026 the Balearic Government, alongside other regional administrations, requested structural investment geared towards increasing capacity.
Those requests highlighted work on terminal buildings, aircraft stands, runways and airfields to handle rising demand, prevent overcrowding and maintain service standards.
Costa denied that this amounted to backing expansion. Government sources referred instead to a letter saying the requested airport improvements were not tied to more passengers and were intended to reduce the infrastructure’s impact on the territory.
