Mallorca PP demands halt to Balearic airport expansion

In Palma, Mallorca, the PP is demanding a halt to any increase in airport capacity across the Balearic Islands. On 25 September, parliamentary spokesman Sebastià Sagreras called on Transport Minister Óscar Puente and airport operator Aena to drop measures that would allow the islands’ airports to handle more passengers.

The row centres on the Airport Regulation Document for 2027 to 2031, known as DORA III. Sagreras said the plan must match the Balearic Islands’ strategy to contain tourism growth.

Investment without more capacity

The PP says it is not rejecting airport investment. Sagreras said the islands want spending on safety, services, mobility, intermodality and infrastructure — but not investment tied to higher passenger numbers.

The Balearic Government told Aena in writing in May that planned airport investment should not be linked to an increase in passengers, according to Sagreras. He now wants Aena to abandon every measure that expands airport capacity.

Clash with Puente

Sagreras was responding to a video posted by Puente on social media. He accused the minister of “unacceptable paternalism” and rejected Puente’s description of objections to airport expansion as “clumsy”.

He also pointed to measures adopted by the Balearic Government during this term, including a ban on new tourist flats across the archipelago and efforts to bring more affordable homes onto the market for residents.

Sagreras said decisions to curb tourism growth could not sit alongside airport growth imposed from Madrid. He urged Puente to listen to the islands and said Aena should reshape its airport policy around the strategy chosen in the Balearics.
