Ibiza airport expansion protest gains support
A protest against the expansion of Ibiza Airport takes place on Sunday, with Prou Eivissa backing the action and urging people across the island to join. The Associació de Joves d'Eivissa is organising the demonstration.
Prou Eivissa says Ibiza has “reached its limit”. It points to another summer of overcrowding, strained infrastructure and demographic pressure, and says the environmental and social cost is growing.
The group argues that efforts to tackle mass tourism cannot sit alongside further growth. It says Ibiza needs less growth, balance and protection for its resources, rather than new markets and more pressure.
Prou Eivissa also highlights complaints made this summer about discharges from airport facilities near Ses Salines Natural Park. The group welcomed the role of young islanders in organising the protest, saying they are standing up for Ibiza.
