Spain's tourism lobby wants airport fees cut
Spain’s tourism lobby wants airport fees cut before the 29 November general election, even as it expects growth to slow towards the end of the year. In Madrid on Tuesday, 6 October, Exceltur executive vice-president Óscar Perelli called on political parties to commit to a national tourism policy. He said the last parliamentary term had produced few substantial changes, despite good intentions.
Exceltur also wants more investment in transport infrastructure, a competitive mix of energy sources to ease the impact of rising fuel prices, and simpler procedures to speed up investment. It is calling for a broad plan to reduce absence from work.
After a good summer for Spanish tourism, the group expects demand to remain strong in the final quarter, but forecasts growth slowing to 2.8%. It says the continuing conflict in the Middle East remains a source of uncertainty. For 2026 as a whole, Exceltur expects tourism’s contribution to the Spanish economy to grow by 2.7% to almost 227,000 million euros, or 12.9% of the total.
