Mallorca reacts to 50m airport passengers forecast

A forecast of 50 million airport passengers across the Balearics in 2031 has alarmed Marga Prohens, president of the Balearic Islands Government. Speaking in Petra, Mallorca, on Wednesday 16 September, she said the number was frightening. The projection is contained in the Airport Regulation Document for 2027 to 2031.

Prohens said the Balearic authorities had not been consulted on the passenger estimate, the document or possible airport expansions. She accused Spain’s central government, the PSOE and Sumar Més of treating the islands’ airports chiefly as a source of revenue.

She said the document had emerged through the media and ran against her government’s policy of restraint. Prohens also said she was angry, though not surprised, by the plans.

Her government, she said, is limiting accommodation capacity, has agreed to cut cruise passenger numbers and has banned new tourist flats. It also plans to bring car limits to all four islands before the end of the parliamentary term.

Prohens said the Balearics now needed a greater role in airport decisions through a co-management law. The islands must have a voice, she argued, without putting AENA’s income at risk.

She also criticised Rosario Sánchez, the Mallorcan Secretary of State for Tourism, over the central government’s tourism policy.
