Mallorca airport protest: hundreds march in Palma

Hundreds of people marched through Palma, Mallorca, on Sunday against airport expansion and the Balearic Government’s tourism promotion policies. The protest went from the Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands to the Consolat de Mar. Marchers chanted: “No more expansion, no more promotion.”

They said the push for restraint clashes with the opening of routes to places including Abu Dhabi and Canada. The Palma march joined protests held for the same cause in Eivissa and Barcelona.

Forecast points to 50 million passengers

The action came days after investment plans and passenger forecasts emerged in the DORA III airport planning document. It projects up to 50 million passengers across the Balearic Islands’ airports by 2031.

Pere Joan Femenia, spokesman for the platform against the airport expansion, said AENA’s plans for the coming years risk tourism and climate “collapse”. He accused the airport operator of lying, saying Palma had exceeded its limit of 66 flights an hour on 18 occasions.

Protesters call for fewer flights

The platform wants fewer flights, a halt to private jets and a co-management law. It said 23,000 private aircraft were recorded across the Balearic Islands in 2025.

Protesters also backed people affected by airport traffic, including residents of Colònia de Sant Jordi, and called for night flights to stop. Femenia said aircraft should not keep passing over homes after midnight.

Representatives of MÉS per Mallorca, Podemos and Coalició per Mallorca attended, along with former Balearic Government vice-president Juan Pedro Yllanes.
