Mallorca's Alaró castle walls: handover urged
Mallorca’s Castell d’Alaró walls remain in Spanish state hands: on 1 October, the Balearic parliament calls for a faster handover to the Council of Mallorca or another responsible authority. The aim is to make the walls easier to restore and conserve.
A parliamentary committee agreed to the People’s Party proposal without objection, according to the Balearic parliament. Until any handover, the state remains the owner. Parliament says Spain’s government must meet its legal duties to maintain and protect the walls, taking the necessary action as quickly as possible.
Parliament also wants a lasting arrangement for Spain’s government and Balearic institutions to work together on conserving the castle. It backs work by the Balearic government, the Council of Mallorca and Alaró town council to preserve the historic site. It also recognises the years of work by local group Alrum, castle volunteers and others in Alaró.
