Mallorca housing: Alaró frees site for rental homes

A vacant municipal site in Alaró, Mallorca, is being earmarked for protected rental homes. On 4 September, Alaró Town Council approved a change of use for the residential property in Carrer Ermità Joan Mir and agreed to give its plot to the Balearic Housing Institute (Ibavi) free of charge. Under the agreement, Ibavi must use the land to promote and build protected homes for rent.

The building had previously been used for supervised housing but is no longer in use. The council said it was in poor condition and would have needed significant investment to bring it up to standard.

Priority for long-term registered residents

Mayor Llorenç Perelló said the council had to play its part in helping local people, especially young people, find an affordable home. He said people who have been registered in Alaró for a long time will receive top priority.

Perelló said public bodies needed to work together and use the resources available to tackle the housing problem. He described handing the site to Ibavi as a more useful option than renovating the former municipal property.

Supervised housing remains available

The change will not leave users of the supervised-housing service without an alternative, the council said. Alaró has another property offering the service in Plaça del Rosari.

The council said that home has enough places for people who need them. The Carrer Ermità Joan Mir site can now be brought into Ibavi’s protected-housing programme.
